How useful is travel health insurance: Compare your travel habits

In principle, we recommend an travel health insurance both for longer long-distance trips and for short holidays of several days. This is because, even if the probability of an unforeseeable event occurring is higher during longer stays, you can also fall ill or possibly suffer an accident during a short trip. If you travel without the protection of travel health insurance, medical treatments in EU countries as well as in non-EU countries can be associated with high costs and thus a financial risk for you.

Why statutory health insurance is not sufficient for travel abroad

The statutory health insurance funds cover treatment costs in Germany and partly also in other EU countries through so-called social security agreements. If you travel to another EU country and need medical treatment there, you can first show your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) on the back of your e-card to the doctor or hospital. This means that you will be reimbursed for medical treatment in accordance with the respective regulations of the destination country. What does that mean? If the percentage differs from the regulation in Germany, you may have to pay part of the treatment costs yourself in other EU countries. In this case, private travel health insurance will protect you: Compare the components and included benefits of our insurance products now.

How do I best protect myself on long-distance journeys?

On long-distance journeys to countries outside the EU or the European Economic Area (EEA) , you are not insured in the event of an emergency without private health insurance. If, for example, you have an accident during your holiday and have to be treated in hospital, you will have to bear the entire cost of treatment yourself. If you cannot receive adequate treatment in a foreign hospital and are, therefore, dependent on medical transport back to your home country (Germany), covering the costs yourself is simply not possible in most cases.

With HanseMerkur travel health insurance, you not only cover medically necessary return transport during your trip abroad, but also medically expedient return transport. This means that you can also make use of a return transport if, for example, you can recover better in a hospital at home near your family and the doctor treating you considers this to be sensible.

Foreign health insurance: Compare our tariffs

Depending on your individual requirements and demands, you should also choose your travel insurance. If you are undertaking a single trip, we recommend our travel health insurance up to 365 days. The benefit to you: outpatient treatment, medicines and dressings, painkilling dental treatment and medical repatriation to Germany. HanseMerkur's travel health insurance policies offer you and your family comprehensive insurance cover on holiday trips abroad. If you suffer an accident during your holiday or have to see a doctor due to illness, we will reimburse the costs incurred for outpatient and inpatient treatment in hospital. In addition, we establish contact between a doctor appointed by us and your family doctor and the hospital doctors treating you. If you wish, we can also provide information for your relatives.

If, on the other hand, you travel several times a year and for no longer than 56 days per trip, it is worth taking out our annual travel health insurance. It protects you on worldwide stays abroad and is often already worthwhile if you take 2 trips a year.

Suitable travel health insurance for young people

Would you like to discover the world as a student, au pair, work & travel traveller or for an internship abroad for several months? Then we recommend our travel health insurance for students, pupils and trainees up to 35 years of age, which protects you on worldwide trips up to a travel duration of 5 years. To complete your protection, you can optionally add an additional package. In that case, you can rely on travel liability, luggage, travel accident and emergency insurance during your trip abroad.
